Dismantling Ableism
THE BASICS:
1) ABLEISM DEFINED
- Here are some definitions of key terms in the fight to end institutional ableism. It is important that we begin from a set of shared definitions and that we use our definitions and come back to them often.
2) ABLE-BODIED PRIVILEGE
- To learn about systems of privilege, we recommend that you begin with "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" by Peggy McIntosh.
- Phyllis M. May-Machunda offers a substantial response to McIntosh concerning able-bodied privilege in her essay "Exploring the Invisible Knapsack of Able-bodied Privilege."
- "Strategies for and Benefits of Dismantling Ableism" (The full text is not available on-line; the book is available on amazon.)
